Pinguecula eye | causes | symptoms | treatment | prevention




If you have a small yellowish-white bump in the white part of the eye. That apers to pup out when you look out the mirror. If so, you may have a pinguecula.


Pinguecula is an extremely common degenerative condition of the pterygium.
It is characterized by the formation of a yellowish-white patch on the bulbar conjunctiva near the limbus.

Causes

  • It has been considered as an age change, occurring more commonly in a person exposed to strong sunlight, dust, and wind. As it is similar to pterygium. 
  • High exposure to dryness increased to development of pinguecula.
  • Working on a laptop for a long period of time or using mobile may also develop pinguecula.
As most of the people did not recognize it because they don't have any symptoms. But it is possible that it can cause dryness, redness, and irritation.

Symptoms

  • Yellowish growth on the conjunctiva.
  • Sometimes you may notice Redness and irritation in your eye
  • You may also feel discomfort like a foreign body sensation.
  • In most cases, no symptoms are seen so, that the patient did not notice the disease.


Diagnosis

A pinguecula is typically diagnosis by a clinical examination by using a slit-lamp. Which helps a doctor to closely examine your eyes. 

Treatment

  • Your doctor may prescribe artificial tears, gel, or ointment to make your eyes more lubricant, reducing discomfort, redness, and irritation.
  • In severe cases, topical steroids are used to control inflammation.
  • Lastly and in the rear case, Surgical treatment is required.
    If you have Pinguecula it is best to check your eye regularly.

Prevention

To prevent your eyes from developing pinguecula or to keep your pinguecula from pumping out further. There is some easy step you can take:

  1. When outdoor you can use sunglasses that have good UVA and UVB protection.
  2. Consider using artificial tear keeps your eye lubricant as this can reduce irritation.
  3. Pinguecula can become large in this case medication such as topical steroids may be required temporarily.
